The word 'environment' in Japanese has 2 meanings. The first one refers to the whole spatial expanse of our surroundings. The second one refers to our subjective experience of the outside world in the social and natural landscape that surrounds us. The meaning of environment that I am interested in is the latter one. I look at the environment that is, the outside world from the point of view of its subjects.

The particular nature of our organism-with its unique senses, consciousness, and perception determines the way we perceive the world around us. Some phenomena fall outside our ability to perceive it. Interaction is what establishes the relationship between the subject and the outside world. This is because the point at which we are looking at the outside world is subjective and our relationship with the outside world is a dynamic one.” Toshiya Tsunoda. 2000
